Accessing your Windows Desktop from Outside the UW Campus
You can use Remote Desktop to access your work computer from off-campus by using a gateway provided by the Physics Department.
Prerequisites:
· Your work computer should be configured to allow remote desktop connections, have a permanent IP address, and be configured never to “sleep”. Email [email protected] if you need help with this. Also, check with your supervisor or PI about any policies for remotely accessing your work computer.
To connect to your work computer with remote desktop:
1. Make a note of the IP address of your work computer. You can find your IP address by visiting the following website from your work computer:
Your IP address will start with 172.28….
Note: The following steps will be done on your home computer. Most of them only need to be done the first time you connect.
2. Download PuTTy from the following URL:
http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe
3. Run PuTTy. Note: You may want to move the PuTTY program to your desktop or create a shortcut to it.
4. Enter portal.phys.washington.edu under Host Name.
5. On the Category menu on the left, expand SSH under Connection and click Tunnels.
6. Enter 3388 under Source port.
7. Under Destination, type the IP address of your computer, followed by :3389. For example, if your IP address was “154.22.89.52”, you would type “154.22.89.52:3389”.
8. Click Add.
9. On the Category menu on the left, click Session at the top.
10. In the middle of the screen, under Saved Sessions, type physics office remote desktop and click Save.
11. Click Open, and click Yes on the PuTTY Security Alert that is displayed. You will be prompted for your Physics user name and password. When you type your password, it is normal for the cursor not to move. Unless “Access denied” is displayed, you have typed your password correctly.
Note: Your Physics user name and password required here may not be the same as your UW NetID or your work computer. Email [email protected] if you are unable to log in.
12. You can now minimize the PuTTY window, but do not close it. It is the link between your home computer and the UW campus.
13. Run Remote Desktop. Under Computer: enter localhost:3388. Click Connect.
14. Log in to your work computer as you normally do. When you’re finished working, go to the Start Menu and click Log Off.
15. Close the PuTTY window by typing exit.
16. For future connections, open PuTTY and look under Saved Sessions. Double-click physics office remote desktop. Log in and run remote desktop as normal.
